Best mangoes in Karachi: a 2026 buying guide (Sindhri, Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol)
Pakistan's mango season at a glance
Mango season in Pakistan runs May through September. Different varieties peak at different times, so the "best" mango in Karachi changes month by month. This guide breaks down the four varieties worth buying, what to pay per kg in Karachi mandis this year, and how to spot the good crates.
The four mangoes worth buying
1. Sindhri — the early season king (May–June)
Grown across interior Sindh, Sindhri mangoes are oval, golden-yellow when ripe, fibre-free, and sweet without being cloying. Look for fruit that yields slightly to thumb pressure and smells fragrant at the stem.
Expected Karachi price: Rs 280–360/kg at peak, dropping to Rs 220/kg late June.
2. Chaunsa — the export champion (July–August)
Chaunsa is what most Pakistani export crates carry. Honey-sweet, almost no fibre, deep yellow flesh. Three sub-varieties: white Chaunsa, sweet Chaunsa, and Sumar Bahisht Chaunsa — the last is rare and worth the splurge.
Expected price: Rs 380–520/kg.
3. Anwar Ratol — the connoisseur's pick (June–July)
Small, intensely aromatic, and almost custard-like inside. Originally from India but grown widely in Punjab now. Pair with doodh patti for the most Pakistani breakfast possible.
Expected price: Rs 450–600/kg (smaller fruit, premium pricing).
4. Langra — the cooking mango (July)
Greenish skin even when ripe, slightly tart, holds shape well. Best for mango lassi, aamras, and chutneys. Often cheaper than Chaunsa.
Expected price: Rs 250–320/kg.
How to pick a good crate
- Smell the stem. A ripe mango smells sweet at the stem end. No smell = unripe; sour smell = over-ripe.
- Press gently. Slight give is perfect. Hard = ripen 2–3 days at room temperature. Mushy = use today.
- Check for black spots. Small black freckles are fine (sugar spots). Large soft black patches mean rot.
- Avoid shrivelled skin. Wrinkles around the stem mean the fruit has been off the tree too long.
How to ripen mangoes at home
Wrap firm mangoes in newspaper and store at room temperature for 2–3 days. Once ripe, refrigerate up to 5 days. Never refrigerate unripe mangoes — the chill kills the ripening enzyme.
