New academic year starts in August-September across most Pakistani school boards — Punjab, Sindh, Federal, Cambridge and Aga Khan. The complete back-to-school checklist
1. School bag
The single most-abused item — replace every 2 years minimum. Primary (Grade 1-5): padded shoulder straps, 15-18 L, Rs 1,800–3,500. Middle/High (Grade 6-10): 25-30 L with laptop sleeve, Rs 3,500–7,500. Skip fake-branded bags from Sunday bazaars — stitching fails by December.
2. Uniform
Shirts + trousers/shalwar: 3 sets minimum (Mon-Wed-Fri rotation with weekend wash), Rs 1,200–2,500 per set. PT kit: 1 set, Rs 1,500–2,200. Sweater/blazer (winter): Rs 2,000–4,500. Shoes: black leather school shoes, Rs 2,200–4,500. Bata and Servis last a full year. Socks: 5 pairs, Rs 600 total.
3. Textbooks
Punjab Textbook Board (PTB): Grade 1-10, Rs 180–450 per subject. Full set Rs 2,400–5,500. Sindh Textbook Board: similar pricing. Federal (FBISE): Rs 250–500 per book. Cambridge O/A Levels: Rs 1,800–4,200 per subject (imported). Buy used where possible for Class 9-10 — saves 40%.
4. Notebooks & registers
Copies (72 pages): Rs 90–140 each. Get 12 for the year. Registers (200 pages): Rs 220–380. One per major subject. Rough notebook: 2× per year. Preferred brands: Dollar, Piyaray Lal, Sun Excel.
5. Stationery essentials
Geometry box (Camlin/Deli) Rs 450–900. Pencils (12-pack HB) Rs 220. Ball pens (pack of 10) Rs 280. Erasers + sharpener Rs 120. Colour pencils (24) Rs 550. Sketch pens (12) Rs 380. Glue stick + scissors Rs 260. A4 file/folder Rs 180. Highlighters (4-pack) Rs 320. Total stationery kit: ~Rs 2,800.
6. Water bottle
Insulated (Milton/Lion Star): Rs 850–1,600. Keeps water cool till lunch. Regular plastic: Rs 250–450. Replace every year — old bottles harbour bacteria.
7. Lunch box
Insulated 3-compartment: Rs 900–1,800. Steel tiffin: Rs 1,200–2,400 — lasts forever. Skip cheap plastic — warps after 20 microwave uses.
8. Extras parents forget
Name labels/stickers: Rs 200 (essential — 30% of lost items are recovered because of these). Umbrella: Rs 450–900 for monsoon. Handkerchiefs: 5-pack Rs 250. Hair accessories (for girls): black bands/clips per school rules.
